Prof. dr. Sali BASHOTA
Biography of the author
Sali Bashota was born on 31st of August 1959 in Caravik of Klina. He finished his elementary school and Gymnasium in Kijeva. He enrolled in the Department of Albanian Literature and Language in the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Prishtina and graduated in 1982. Following graduation he worked as a teacher in “Luigj Gurakuqi” Gymnasium in Klina and continued his postgraduate studies in the field of literature. In 1988 he mastered on philological sciences on the topic Mitrush Kuteli’s Fiction Work, and defended his PhD in 1998 on the topic Character in the Albanian fiction between two world wars (Konica, Koliqi, Kuteli, Migjeni). In 1984 he took a position as fellow professor at the Faculty of Philology, advancing to the title of a lecturer (1994), docent (2000), associate professor (2005) and ordinaire professor (2010).
In the Faculty of Philology he teaches the following subjects: Arbereshi Romanticist Literature, Albanian Romanticist Literature, Literary Ideas and Albanian Publicistics.
Since 1999 he is editing director of the Publishing House “Rozafa” in Prishtina. Between the years 2000-2003 he was editor in chief of the literary magazine Jeta e Re, and during 2000-2004 he was chief of the Department of Albanian Literature in the Faculty of Philology. In 2005, upon a proposal by the Embassy of the United States in Prishtina, he attended the project on Library Administration in the USAand was certified by the State Department on an international management program.
He was cofounder of the international Kosova Library Week event (2003), initiator of World Book Days in Kosova (2005), cofounder of National Biblioeconomy Conference (2006), cofounder of Albanological Albanian-Kosova Portal (2010).
From 2009 to 2012 he was Chairing of Editing Board of Prishtina University and President of Doctoral Study Board at the Faculty of Philology.
From 2009 to 2013 he was Vice-President of the Balkan Libraries Union, seated in Edirne of Turkey, and its Executive Board member since 2013.
In 2004, 2008 and 2012 the Faculty of Philology of Prishtina University proposed him as member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosova.
On 2nd August 1998, the Serb military and police burned down his house together with his personal library and handwritings.
He is author to thirty books of poetry, poetic prose, studies on literature and literary criticism. He is also one of the most translated poets in Kosovo in different languages and presented in many collections in the country and abroad. His poetry has ne translated into English, French, German, Romanian, Polish, Italian, Turkish, Swedish, Hungarian, Arabic, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Esperanto, etc., and his works were promoted in Paris, Sète, Bucharest, Sofia, Basel, Malmö etc., and in various international poetry events. He is a member of PEN Center of Kosova and National Council of Kosova World’s Memory. From January 2003 to October 2013 he was Director of National and University Library of Kosova and from 2014 to 2015 he was President of Managing Board of the Kosova National Library “Pjetër Bogdani”.
For his literary and scientific achivements he was honored with Pjetër Bogdani Award for the book Kuteli prozator, poet, kritik, 1999 as the best book of the year by the Writers Association of Kosova, Prishtina, 1999;
Golden Pen Award for 1990 2000, Review for Literature, Art and Culture Fjala, Prishtina; Menada, Annual Award for special creativity, International Literary Event, Naimi’s Days, Tetova, Macedonia, 2004; Annual Award of Poetry Meetings in Gjakova, for the best book of poetry of the year Bukuri e nëmur (Cursed Beauty), Gjakova, 2006;
Serembe Award for literary and scientific achievement, Lachian Artists Club and Pedrollo Foundation, Albania-Italy, 2010; Medal of 90th Anniversary of National Library, National Library of Albania, Tirana, 2011; Literary Prize for the best book of poetry in 2011, entitled Recovered Manuscript, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Prishtina, 2012; Prize at the Gjakova Poetry Meeting, for the best book of poetry of the year 2011, entitled Recovered Manuscript, Gjakova, 2012.
